One day, the beginning of the summer, the boys and I were talking about how much we all like Harry Potter. I told them we should have a movie marathon! They stared at me like I was an alien. Then I explained what a movie marathon was. I was no longer an alien. But instead of watching one movie after the other on the same day we decided we'd watch one movie everyday for a week. And instead of just watching the movies, I thought it'd be fun to do a different Harry Potter activity everyday before we watched the movie. So we found a week during the break that we didn't have anything else going on and made that our official Harry Potter Week! We researched what we'd want to do, did our shopping, and then waited patiently for Harry Potter week to arrive. The boys we're so excited!
Got a bunch of ideas from this site.
Day 1
The Sorcerer's Stone
We camped out eating sandwiches for dinner while watching the movie. Then for dessert we ate Chocolate Frogs. There's a jumping chocolate frog in the first movie. Each frog comes with a witch or wizard trading card, just like the movie.
I also printed off a bunch of Harry Potter coloring pages (all of the house crests? shields?, and then pictures of Harry/Ron/etc)
Day 2
The Chamber of Secrets
Early in the day we painted wood dowels (I got a variety pack of sizes). They got to pick the color they made their wands. Then we wrapped pipe cleaners around the bottom as a handle. I found a website on how to make Harry Potter glasses out of pipe cleaners. Everyone became Harry Potter for the day.
Our #3 (far right) looks like he belongs on the cover of a Backstreet Boys cd.
Apparently the further apart you spread you legs the better. :)
Day 3
The Prisoner of Azkaban
We made our own Marauders Maps since this is the movie when Harry first gets it from Fred and George.
Day 4
The Goblet of Fire
Bertie Botts every flavored Beans! Some tasted great. Some...not so much.
Dad got an earthworm flavored bean.
He didn't like it.
Can you guess what this is?
Booger!
The boys made me try a vomit flavored one. It made me dry heave. Nasty, nasty, nasty.
But we all had fun.
Day 5
The Order of the Phoenix
If I was thinking, I would have done this activity earlier in the week. It would have been more fun if we had made them while we were still watching movies that had Harry playing Quidditch games in them.
Water noodles...
to flying brooms!
We discovered that there is no way to make a boy look appropriate in a picture when there's something between their legs. ;) After many extremely funny, and inappropriate looking pictures, we've decided to never post any of them. But the boys have had so much fun flying around on their brooms.
Day 6
The Half-Blood Prince
Homemade pumpkin juice!
Ingredients2 Quarts apple cider, divided
1 piece fresh ginger, (2") sliced
1 cinnamon stick1/2 teaspoon whole cloves1/4 cup honey1/2 cup brown sugar
1 28 oz. can pumpkin pureeDirectionsPour 3 cups of the apple cider into a saucepan; add the ginger slices, cinnamon stick, and cloves. Bring the mixture to a boil, turn down to a simmer, and cook for 15 minutes. Remove from heat, add the honey and brown sugar, and stir to dissolve. Refrigerate the mixture until well-chilled, or up to a week. When ready to serve, strain the apple cider mixture into a large pitcher. Add the remaining apple cider and the pumpkin puree; stir well.
I did not use the full amount of pumpkin. I refrigerated the juice after adding the pumpkin, then strained it again before serving to get rid of the thickness from the pumpkin. Still had a pumpkin taste, but not the thickness.
Day 7
The Deathly Hallows Part 1
This is the first movie that they talk about the elder wand. The idea had been to make an elder wand out of pretzels and marshmallows covered in chocolate. Although they tasted yummy, they looked kind of lame. :( So we made a few wands without the marshmallows. Pretzels and chocolate! Yum!
Chocolate wands!
Day 8
The Deathly Hallows Part 2
Homemade Butterbeer!
We were all so sad when we finished the last movie.
But we made some great memories and had so much fun.
While I had a lot of the things I needed in my crafts and kitchen for these activities, I have put together a full list of what you'd need to recreate exactly what we did.
Things you'll need
-All 8 Harry Potter movies
Day1
-chocolate frogs (we found ours at a candy store in the mall, but you can order them online as well)
Day2
-variety pack of wood dowels
-paint brushes or sponges
-paint (we had 2 different shades of brown as well as black)
-package of brown pipe cleaners (or black, or both)
-scissors or wire cutters to cut pipe cleaners
Day3
-Drawing paper (to your desired size)
-pens (something that won't bleed when it gets wet)
-tea to stain the paper and make it look old
-how to fold the map here
Day4
-Bertie Botts every flavor beans (we found ours at a candy store in the mall, but you can order them online as well)
Day5
-swim noodles
-colored duct tape (black, brown, tan, gold, or whatever floats your boat)
-Brown felt (not the craft sheets, the stuff by the yard)
-sharp knife/blade to cut noodles to desired length and to make holes to thread the felt through
-scissors to cut felt
-marker to write broom name
Day6
-apple cider (i just used juice)
-fresh ginger
-cinnamon stick
-whole cloves
-honey
-brown sugar
-pumpkin puree
-pot, pitcher and strainer
Day7
-long pretzel sticks
-chocolate
-double boiler (or you could microwave it)
-wax or parchment paper to put wands on while chocolate cools and sets
-marshmallows (optional) ;)
Day8
-cream soda
-imitation butter
-whip cream (homemade, or store bought) I used the recipe on the website, but it was too rich with the imitation butter flavor. Next time I'll leave that out.
-rootbeer mugs or mason jars (don't forget to frost them in the freezer before serving)
Hope you have as much fun as we did!
